In chloroplasts, thylakoids are embedded in the stroma (an interior portion of a chloroplast). The stroma contains ribosomes, enzymes, and chloroplast DNA. The thylakoid consists of the thylakoid membrane and the enclosed region called the thylakoid lumen. A stack of thylakoids forms a group of coin-like structures called a granum.

The major aims of this work were to design a procedure for the isolation of the thylakoid lumen which could be generally used to characterize lumenal proteins. Thylakoid lumen is the innermost aqueous compartment of the chloroplast. It is enclosed by a thylakoid membrane. It plays an important role in the ATP synthesis or phosphorylation driven by chemiosmosis. Protons are pumped across the membrane into the lumen, which generates concentration gradient across the thylakoid membrane. The inside of the thylakoid membrane is called the lumen, and outside the thylakoid membrane is the stroma, where the light-independent reactions take place.

An example of this component is found in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Until recently the knowledge of the lumen composition and function was limited, but a more profound understanding of the thylakoid lumen content is gradually emerging. The discovery that the thylakoid lumen contains numerous enzymes, besides the already known proteins directly involved or associated with the photosynthetic reactions, have changed the view on this compartment.

The grana Thylakoid membranes possess the molecular structures for one segment of the photosystem (photosystem II), the stromal Thylakoid membranes, the molecular structures for another segment (photosystem I), with the lumens one continuous space, both segments requiring light-energy, hence referred to as light-dependent reactions.Prokaryotic cells that carry out photosynthesis (e.g Carbonic anhydrase converts the HCO 3 − to CO 2 at the lower pH maintained in the illuminated thylakoid lumen by the light‐driven H + pump, generating CO 2 at 10 times or more the thylakoid HCO 3 − concentration. Efflux of this CO 2 can suppress Rubisco oxygenase activity and stimulate carboxylase activity in the stroma. The thylakoid lumen is a secluded space (in terms of the all around chloroplast stroma) that need to be such in order to facilitate chemiosmosis. Figure legend: In the chloroplast's thylakoid membranes, electrons in a pigment-protein complex, called photosystem II (PS-II), excited by PS-II-captured photons, are shuttled to the next step in an electron-chain of proteins, the transported electrons replaced by PS-II-splitting (oxidation) of water molecules (H 2 O), releasing protons (H + ions) and oxygen into the thylakoid lumen. Thylakoid lumen

The thylakoid lumen which is enclosed by the thylakoid membrane is a continuous aqueous phase. It is important especially for photophosphorylation in photosynthesis. The protons are pumped into the lumen via the membrane while reducing the pH level. The electron transport chain moves protons across the thylakoid membrane into the lumen. At the same time, splitting of water adds protons to the lumen, and reduction of NADPH removes protons from the stroma.

The thylakoid membrane has a characteristic flat shape and is differentiated into appressed grana stacks and single non-appressed stroma-exposed lamellae. The inner surface of the thylakoid membrane encloses a narrow, continuous com-partment, the lumen (1, 2).

Thylakoid membrane encloses the innermost compartment or thylakoid lumen. The inner membrane of chloroplast is sometimes continuous with the thylakoid membrane. Thylakoid membrane is composed of phospholipids and galactolipids.

A Thylakoid is a membrane-bound compartment inside chloroplasts and cyanobacteria. They are the site of the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis. The word "thylakoid" is derived from the Greek thylakos, meaning "sac".Thylakoids consists of a thylakoid membrane surrounding a thylakoid lumen.Chloroplast thylakoids frequently form stacks of disks referred to as "grana" (singular: granum). 2020-12-06 In photosynthesis, the light-dependent reactions take place on the thylakoid membranes. The inside of the thylakoid membrane is called the lumen, and outside the thylakoid membrane is the stroma, where the light-independent reactions take place. The thylakoid membrane contains some integral membrane protein complexes that catalyze the light reactions. 2011-12-13 periplasm/thylakoid lumen and a short domain in the cyto-plasm/stroma (that of TatB being larger than TatA). In contrast to the chloroplast stroma, less attention has been paid to the thylakoid lumen, an inner, continuous space enclosed by the thylakoid membrane in which redox regulation is also essential for photosystem biogenesis and function.
