The program emphasizes advanced competence in scientific research, and allows participants the opportunity to pursue advanced work in independent research, in addition to earning honors upon graduation. Cognitive science is an interdisciplinary major that focuses on the mind and cognition from a variety of perspectives and approaches. The core and electives sample from courses from computer science, human and evolutionary biology, linguistics, mathematics, philosophy and psychology. Cognitive Science major students are expected to approach problems of knowledge using the tools of several different disciplines: philosophy, psychology, linguistics, computer science, neuroscience, and various social sciences. Honors in Cognitive Science Majors with strong academic records and an interest in pursuing honors should contact the director of undergraduate studies in early spring of junior year. Qualifying students prepare a thesis proposal under the guidance of a faculty mentor and present the proposal, along with the names of the mentor and a second faculty reader, to the program committee for review. Admission to the major is granted by the Cognitive Science Program.
